Where Avrupa Yöresel's store started
Avrupa Yöresel sells Turkish regional products from Amsterdam to customers in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France. The whole store was in Turkish, so it ranked for 0 of 506 keywords in its customers' language. With 773 products and a menu of 20 groups, the catalogue was big enough that we started with an audit before adding any language.
What we built for Avrupa Yöresel
We audited all 773 products and filled in their SEO fields. We set up the VAT rates per country through the Shopify product category and added Dutch and German language versions with their own URLs. We also reduced the menu from 20 to 8 groups.

What the Dutch and German versions changed
We went through all 773 products, set up VAT per country through the Shopify product category and filled in the SEO fields.
Before, the store ranked for 0 of 506 keywords in its customers' language, because everything was in Turkish. Avrupa Yöresel now has Dutch and German language versions with their own URLs, and VAT rates are set up per country through the Shopify product category.

Why the store didn't show up in Dutch or German searches
People in the Netherlands and Germany usually search in Dutch or German, even when they're looking for Turkish products. Search engines match a search to pages in the same language, so a store that is written only in Turkish has very little chance of appearing for those searches. That explains why Avrupa Yöresel ranked for 0 of 506 keywords in its customers' language before we started. The products were there, but the pages were only in Turkish.
Starting with an audit of 773 products
Before we added any language, we went through all 773 products. We checked the SEO fields of each product, such as the title and the description that search engines show in their results, and filled them in where they were missing. Those fields are often the first thing a customer reads in Google, so they shape the first impression of each product. We also reduced the menu from 20 to 8 groups. Every menu group appears again in each language version, so a shorter menu is easier to browse and easier to keep up to date in three languages.
VAT per country through the product category
When a store sells to customers in four countries, the VAT rate can differ per country and per product. In Shopify, the product category of each product helps decide which rate applies in which country. We set up the VAT rates per country this way as part of the audit, so the rate follows the product and the country of the order. Customers never see this detail, but every order depends on it.
Dutch and German versions with their own URLs
Each language version has its own URLs. Google advises a separate URL for every language version of a page, because it can then show each searcher the right one. That lets Google show the Dutch page to someone who searches in Dutch and the German page to someone who searches in German. The Turkish store stays where it was. For a store that sells into Germany, a German language version with its own URLs is the first step towards being found there. Our own brand Midoricha also runs one Shopify store in several languages. You can read how we run this work on our SEO and AEO page.
What Avrupa Yöresel's customers can do now
Customers in the Netherlands and Germany can now shop in their own language, on pages that search engines can show for searches in Dutch and German. The shorter menu of 8 groups also makes the range easier to browse.
